Classic Japanese homes with contemporary American and European kitchen and baths.
EDINA specializes in new and restored classic Japanese homes with modern, imported kitchen baths. Our homes are for customers seeking global standard build and fixture quality in classic Japanese homes at prices closer to what you would expect in the United States. Through direct import of kitchen and baths, tiles and moldings, windows and other key materials, we substantially renovate or relocate and restore traditional Japanese homes with spacious contemporary floor plans and kitchen and bathroom designs you’ll be proud to show your friends and relatives from overseas.
Many foreigners arrive in Japan and are severely disappointed with the buildings and architecture in this country. Why should such low-quality houses and apartments cost so much? And where are the beautiful Japanese homes we saw in all the books? Even when you do find a lovely, traditional Japanese house, it is never built to current standards overseas. Single pain and aluminum windows are common. Builders rarely use the level of insulation to which foreigners are accustomed. Rooms are tiny, even when the overall floor space would accommodate a more open, spacious plan. And the kitchen and baths! Has anyone figured out why an all-plastic “unit bath” or Japanese “system kitchen” costs more than a beautifully finished kitchen or bath with real materials in the US? Though our initial build projects and working with KARL BENGS, a well-known German designer specializing in restoration of Japanese century homes, we developed our company EDINA.
EDINA substantially renovates and relocates and restores traditional Japanese homes— but not just as they were in the Edo period. We modernize the floor plans and the kitchen and baths, among other things, using materials directly imported from overseas. We use insulation as we would in the United States, including plenty in ceilings and floors, and import or use domestically made wooden-frame, double pane windows for a bright, warm, comfortable house. We design houses with “yuka danbo” or central heating, with ample insulation, on the expectation that customers will keep the entire house heated to a comfortable level, rather than only heating certain rooms and sitting around a table with electric blankets, as is common in Japan. The result is a classic restoration of a traditional Japanese home, but with global standard fixtures and equipment and top-class, contemporary design in rooms, floor plans, kitchens and baths. We substantially renovate or restore “kominka” style country homes, “Machiya” style city homes, and “Sukiya” style elegant Japanese homes, among others. We typically work with “miya-daiku” certified temple architects to carefully disassemble and relocate period structures that serve as the basis of our re-builds.
